TIBERIAS – CINEMA ELISABETHA

The Elizabeth Hotel is a complex that includes a hotel and theater and cinema halls built in Tiberias by pioneer and entrepreneur Shlomo Feingold.

The building, which was completed in 1929, was named after Feingold’s wife.

The luxurious hotel was 3 floors and was designed for hospitality and entertainment. It was the first hall in Israel to be built without supporting columns, using interlocking concrete beams that formed the roof skeleton. A dome was built on the roof of the hotel

The right wing included 80 guest rooms, and in the left wing, a theater hall and a cinema were built, where silent films were screened.

The hotel included a lounge with a magnificent marble fountain at the center, a grand hall with red velvet chairs, a banquet hall, smoking rooms and lavishly decorated bridge and billiards rooms.

The hotel, originally called the Feingold Hotel, was renamed the “Elizabeth Hotel” (or in its full name “Elisabetta Relaxation and Medical House”) after Feingold’s wife, Elizabeth-Elizabeth, who died in Alexandria in 1915.

After the establishment of the State of Israel, the building underwent renovation, and on November 15,  1949, the renovated hotel was inaugurated under its new name “Ginosar Hotel”, with the cinema continuing to operate alongside it under the name “Elisheva”.

From the end of the 1960s, the hotel served as a health fund convalescent home. In 1980 the  hotel and the cinema closed in 1983 and since then the building has been abandoned.

In August 2001, the hotel burned down and the dome collapsed.
